About Costlyne
Why Costlyne exists.
AWS environments change continuously. The decisions behind them are rarely revisited at the same pace. Costlyne provides a focused review of cloud spend and the engineering decisions that shape how an environment operates.
The reason for the work
Reassessment requires time and distance from daily delivery.
Cloud environments are the result of decisions made across many teams and stages of growth. Most of those decisions were reasonable when they were made.
As the environment changes, the assumptions behind those decisions can change with it. The difficult part is finding the time to revisit them while the same team is shipping features, supporting production, and responding to current priorities.
AWS spend is often where the effect becomes visible first. The monthly bill can continue to grow even when each individual decision still appears reasonable in isolation.
Costlyne was created to provide that focused period of review.
The underlying problem
Technical decisions do not exist in fixed conditions.
- 1.
Environments change
Workloads, teams, services, and business priorities continue to change after an architecture decision is made.
- 2.
Teams stay focused on delivery
Engineering teams have immediate responsibilities. Reconsidering decisions that still appear to work is rarely the highest priority.
- 3.
Old assumptions persist
A decision can remain technically valid while becoming more expensive, more complex, or less appropriate for the environment around it.
Independent assessment
The work begins with questions, not a predetermined answer.
Costlyne examines the environment, collects the evidence needed to understand it, and evaluates potential changes against the operational and business conditions in which they would be made.
Start with a conversation
Discuss the decisions your team wants to revisit.
A discovery call is used to understand the environment and decide whether an independent assessment would be useful.
